W. Scott Heisler is a nurse with a passion for seeing the future of healthcare and developing ideas to help nurses improve their lives and the care they provide to their patients. 

He is an Innovation Specialist with the Innovation Consultancy at Kaiser Permanente, a not-for-profit Integrated Delivery System providing healthcare for over 8.5 million people each year.The purpose of the Innovation Consultancy is to develop human-centered designs that positively impact the experience of Kaiser patients and the clinicians who care for them.

Heisler has been with Kaiser Permanente since 1996, in roles that have encompassed physician group practice, customer service improvement design and training and his current position in the Innovation Consultancy which he joined in 2006.

Heisler has worked on a several innovation projects including the medication administration solution, called KP MedRite, named a good practice by The Joint Commission. These solutions have been spread across Kaiser’s 32 hospitals and have even been implemented abroad. He has also written and received funding for an innovation grant that explores using an automated wound measurement device. Using lasers, this device serves as an all-in-one solution, allowing the nurse to measure, document and photograph surgical wounds and pressure ulcers. The project is showing great promise and excitement and is currently in phase two of development.

Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, Heisler was a group practice manager for the academic practices of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at Loma Linda Medical Center. He has also assisted in the start-up of an Emergency Medicine physician staffing company providing contracted emergency physicians to hospital EDs. His background is in hospital management and he recently went back to school to complete his nursing degree. His current interest in nursing is in wound care management.

Heisler has a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Redlands and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pacific Union College. He and his wife, Marcia, have 2 grown boys, Marcus and Stefan. Marcus began Medical School in the Fall of 2010 and Stefan graduated in May 2011 from college with a BS in International Business. He lives in Sacramento, CA where he takes fun bike rides with his wife on their tandem bike on the American River Parkway and serves on the National Ski Patrol at a ski resort near Lake Tahoe, CA.
