Bonnie Hagerman
Founder, Care Wear Volunteers, Inc., Frederick, Maryland

Retired in 2011 after 42 years on the faculty of Hood College, Bonnie now devotes her time to the leadership of Care Wear Volunteers.  In 1990 she began sewing flannel kimonos & knitting hats for preemies in hospital NICUs.   Realizing that her contributions were a drop in the proverbial bucket, she recruited others to join the effort and a national organization was born.  Since 1990, the effort has expanded to provide other items requested by hospitals, including booties, blankets/quilts, fabric toys, IV covers, walker caddies, cough pillows, medical-surgical dolls,

infant burial outfits, bibs, burp cloths, prayer shawls, and hand warmers.    The Care Wear Volunteers’ website Hospital List has 500+ listings.  There are 1500+ participants on the mailing list for the hardcopy of the quarterly newsletter.  Participants donate directly to hospitals so there is no way to estimate the number of donated items that have comforted hospital patients across the country.
