Learn about CMS’s current initiatives to improve the delivery of care and new opportunities available to providers.

Cancellation Policy/Late Payment

Continuing Education

Full attendance at the educational sessions is a prerequisite for receiving continuing education. Attendees must sign in at the conference and include their professional license number, if required. Continuing education certificates will be emailed after the conference.

Health Care Executives — CHA is authorized to award 8.25 hours of pre-approved ACHE Qualified Education Credit (non-ACHE) for this program toward the advancement or recertification in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Participants in this program wishing to have the continuing education hours applied toward ACHE Qualified Education credit should indicate their attendance when submitting application to the American College of Healthcare Executives for advancement or recertification.

Nursing — Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, CEP 11924, for 9.9 contact hours.

Harriet Aronow, PhD
Research Scientist III
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Dr. Aronow has a doctorate in applied social psychology from Claremont Graduate University, nationally known for its program in evaluation research. She has had a 40 year career in research and evaluation in health care delivery settings with positions and projects at RAND, UCLA, WISE & Healthy Aging, University of La Verne and Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation. Currently, she is a Research Scientist in Nursing at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Aronow’s research has focused on development and evaluation of a home and community-based preventive health intervention for persons aging with disability and on implementing and evaluating programs providing health services to frail older adults and persons with disabilities.

Patricia Blaisdell, FACHE
Vice President, Continuum of Care
California Hospital Association

Patricia Blaisdell provides membership support and advocacy for hospital-based medical rehabilitation and skilled-nursing services, policy analysis and interpretation, communication with regulatory bodies and third-party payers, and planning and implementation of educational programs. Patricia has more than 25 years of experience in hospital and health care management in acute and post-acute settings. She has particular expertise in clinical operations and reimbursement across the post-acute continuum of care and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Patricia received her bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire, a master’s degree in speech/language pathology from the University of Connecticut, and a master’s degree in health care management from Rensselaer at Hartford.

Pamela Chevreaux
Vice President, Ambulatory Services
Long Beach Memorial Medical Center

Pamela Chevreaux is the vice president of Ambulatory Services at Long Beach Memorial, a division comprised of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Occupational Medicine, Joint Replacement Center, Family Practice, Senior Services, Respiratory Care, Sleep Disorder Centers and Neurodiagnostics. She is Lean-Leader Certified in Healthcare and combines the principles of Lean, evidence-based practice, education and research to implement the mission and vision of innovative, comprehensive patient-centered care. She serves as chair of the California Hospital Association Post-Acute Care Center Advisory Board. Pamela brings with her an impressive history of effective leadership in health care over the last 20 years. She has worked in for-profit health care environments on both the east and west coasts. Most recently, she was President of the Ahlbin Centers for Rehabilitation Medicine Inc. which is affiliated with Yale New Haven Health Systems.

Eric A. Coleman, MD, MPH

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Dr. Eric Coleman is professor of medicine and head of the Division of Health Care Policy and Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Coleman is the Director of the Care Transitions Program, aimed at improving quality and safety during times of care “handoffs.” Dr. Coleman serves as the executive director of the Practice Change Leaders — a national program to develop, support and expand the influence of organizational leaders who are committed to achieving transformative improvements in care for older adults. Dr. Coleman was recognized with a 2012 MacArthur Fellowship for his work in bridging innovation and practice through enhancing the role of patients and family caregivers in improving the quality of their care transitions.

C. Duane Dauner
California Hospital Association

C. Duane Dauner was appointed President/CEO in 1985 of the California Hospital Association, the statewide leader representing the interests of nearly 400 hospitals and health systems in California. Mr. Dauner has been active in national hospital and health care issues, serving on numerous American Hospital Association and American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) boards and committees. He has authored numerous articles and a book; is a nationally known leader on health issues; and has lectured at several California university graduate programs. In 2002, he received ACHE’s highest honor, the Gold Medal Award, and has been honored by the Partners in Care Foundation, National Health Foundation, UCLA and Health Care Executives of Southern California.

Allen Dobson, PhD
Dobson | DaVanzo & Associates, LLC

Dr. Allen Dobson is a health economist and president of Dobson | DaVanzo, where he co-leads the firm’s bundled payment research activities supporting numerous providers, other entities and conveners in their implementation of the CMS Bundled Payment for Care Improvement (BPCI) Initiative. Dr. Dobson has studied Medicare’s various PPSs (e.g., acute care hospitals, long term care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, home health agencies, and ambulatory surgery centers) for over twenty-five years and has directed numerous efforts to model the impact of Medicare and Medicaid payment policies on health care providers using a variety of statistical and econometric methodologies. He also worked for 10 years for CMS advising on the methodology for determining physician practice expenses, and most recently on Medicare Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) policy.

Suzanne Engelder, MSW

Suzanne Engelder has been working in health care for 28 years in several different capacities within acute care, hospice and palliative care settings. Her expertise is in community education and program development. Suzanne has developed pediatric and perinatal hospice programs and currently is the coordinator of the St. Joseph Perinatal Comfort Care Program. Most recently Suzanne has developed The Center for Advance Care Planning and Advocacy, a ministry of St. Joseph Health. She is a certified POLST trainer and a strong advocate for improving end of life care through Advance Care Planning. In 2006 she was privileged to receive the St. Joseph Health System Values in Action award for Justice.

Shelly Garone, MD, FACP

Shelly Garone is board certified in Internal Medicine and also in Hospice & Palliative Medicine. She attended Tufts University undergraduate and Tulane Medical School. She did her Internal Medicine residency at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, and did one year of a Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. She learned as a fellow that she truly loves hospital medicine and joined Kaiser Permanente in 1999 as a hospitalist. During her tenure as a hospitalist, she worked with a team to create the existing Palliative Care Department, literally borrowing space and building from the ground up. She was then certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2010. She now oversees the Continuum of Care with direct leadership of the Palliative Care Department, Elder Care (nursing home providers) Department, Home Health, and Hospice. She recognizes that it is the time between hospital and home when folks are most vulnerable, when bridges linking different venues of care and different providers of care must be built and maintained. She works endlessly on creation of those bridges, trying to find innovative ways to build systems to link care so that the patient never “falls through the cracks.”

Ann Gors

Chief Executive Officer, Kentfield Rehabilitation & Specialty Hospital

Ann Gors is the chief executive officer at Kentfield Rehabilitation & Specialty Hospital, a position she has held since 2003. Ms. Gors also functions as a division president for Vibra Healthcare and is responsible for four long-term acute care hospitals located throughout Northern California. In addition to her work in the long-term acute care industry, Ann has held administrative positions in a range of post-acute care settings including acute rehab hospitals, outpatient clinics and skilled nursing facilities.

Alyssa Keefe

Alyssa Keefe is vice president, regulatory affairs, with the California Hospital Association. At CHA, Ms. Keefe is responsible for policy development and analysis of federal regulation impacting California hospitals and health systems, and serves as a liaison between CHA and federal agencies, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Prior to joining CHA, Ms. Keefe was managing director of the Hospital Quality Alliance, a national public/private collaboration committed to making meaningful, relevant and easily understood information about hospital performance accessible to the public, and to informing and encouraging efforts to improve quality. Ms. Keefe also has served as senior associate director for policy at the American Hospital Association.

Lori Peterson, MA

Lori Peterson is chief executive officer for Collaborative Consulting. She has been involved in the health care industry for 25 years and has a background in psychology and organizational development. Peterson has served in several capacities including business development, strategic partnerships, operations, facilitation and activation of organizational change. She is active in the aging services community and highly motivated to improve and foster progressive change within post-acute and elder care. Ms. Peterson has numerous affiliations and established connections within the industry and is skilled at leveraging multiple perspectives to improve connectivity across the continuum.

Tory Starr is the vice president of Care Management for the Sutter Health System, Valley Area, where he has responsibility for a broad span of functions across the continuum of care including case management, social services, palliative care and post-acute care population management. He has been involved with performance/quality improvement for more than three decades in both the acute and community health care settings. Mr. Starr’s professional focus has been on organizational development and change management as his organizations have navigated the turbulent waters of health care transition. He has specialized in transitions of care and network development.

Rob Walters is the director of Inpatient Rehabilitation at John Muir Health in the east bay of Northern California. He graduated from Saint Mary’s College of California with a bachelor’s degree in Health Science and recently returned to his alma matter to complete his master’s degree in Business Administration. In between, he completed his master’s degree in Physical Therapy at Emory University. Rob is entering his third year as a board member for CHA’s Center for Post-Acute Care and moderates a monthly call-in forum to discuss issues related to Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities.

Ashby Wolfe, MD, MPP, MPH

Dr. Ashby Wolfe serves as chief medical officer for Region IX of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In her current position, her focus is on implementation of the many facets of the ACA and its role in providing access to high quality care and improved health at a lower cost. In addition, Dr. Wolfe provides clinical expertise to many regional CMS programs and divisions, as well as serving as the medical and scientific lead for quality improvement efforts, as chief clinician for all regional CMS outreach and education efforts and as a liaison with health care providers in the region. Dr. Wolfe is a board-certified family physician.
