Effective Oct. 1, 2013, hospitals will be required to report medical diagnosis and procedures using the International Classification of Diseases, Edition 10 (ICD-10).  The ICD-10 code set has the potential to allow for better analysis of disease patterns and treatment outcomes.  In addition, it should allow for more accurate payment based on patient acuity. Implementation of ICD-10 will require significant planning, development, and expenditure on behalf of hospitals to meet the compliance deadline.
