Health care state’s biggest job

Jerry Brown dealt with many controversial issues as governor three-plus decades ago – most notably water, collective bargaining for public employees and farmworkers, highway construction, and the Proposition 13 property tax revolt. Health care was not among them, but that was then and this is now.

Health care is now the state’s largest single economic activity, consuming upward of $200 billion a year in insurance premiums and payouts, patients’ out-of-pocket payments and government funds.
