UC San Francisco researcher Joel Palefsky, M.D., has won an $89 million, eight-year grant from the National Cancer Institute to study anal cancer in those infected with HIV. During the first year of the grant, UCSF will receive $5.6 million. Palesfsky’s planned study will enroll more than 5,000 HIV-infected men and women who have anal cancer at 15 sites nationwide, officials said Thursday. Palefsky is a UCSF professor of medicine and the lead investigator on the project.
