UC Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute has received $2 million for research and educational outreach programs relating to conditions of the cornea and retina that can rob patients of their sight.

The funds come from the nonprofit Discovery Eye Foundation of Los Angeles. In addition to research, institute officials said the funds will be used to inform patients about the latest treatments and raise public awareness.

“This most recent gift, which will allow us to expand well-established outreach programs, gives the institute new ways to serve those who have an interest in vision health,” Dr. Roger Steinert, director of the institute, said in a statement.
