TriWest protests contract award to UnitedHealth

One week after the Department of Defense announced plans to award a $20.5 billion military health care services contract for 21 western states to UnitedHealth Military & Veterans Services, the company that has it now announced it will protest the switch. The Phoenix-based TriWest Healthcare Alliance won the most recent contract in 2009. The Phoenix-based company — which subcontracts with Blue Shield of California to provide care to military personnel and their families in the state — lost out to UnitedHealth when a series of protests put the western region up for rebid.
