TB a top priority for public health leaders

Major hits to public health funding could strip dollars from programs designed to keep tuberculosis under control, and leave communities vulnerable to more severe drug-resistant strains of the bacteria, Bay Area TB experts say. Rates of tuberculosis – a contagious respiratory disease that infects a third of the global population – have been falling nationally and in the Bay Area, but public health experts say the constant threat of drug-resistant cases, which take much more time and money to treat, means TB remains a top priority.
