State seeks to reduce surgical mistakes
Orange County Register - Courtney Perkes

Since the California Department of Public Health began fining hospitals for causing serious harm or death to patients in 2007, Orange County hospitals have been penalized 18 times. Out of those penalties, five were for leaving a piece of surgical equipment behind in a patient’s body. Steve Charbonneau, pictured at left, had a 1-by-2 foot towel left inside his body during a surgery at Hoag Hospital. He underwent a second surgery to remove the towel.
