Small businesses hit hard by big jumps in health coverage costs

A local parochial school principal working on her annual budget looked at the employee health plan piece of her pie recently and wasn’t pleased that costs had jumped 17 percent since last year. Even though the school’s a nonprofit, it resembles a small business in many ways. Interested in this phenomenon, I did some research and talked to some small businesses on the Peninsula. In a nutshell, everyone’s getting hit. Some are coping better than others.
