Senate clears way for confirmation of new FDA commissioner

Lawmakers on Monday cleared the way for the confirmation of Robert Califf as the new commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, despite ongoing objections from senators who have criticized his ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

The Senate overwhelmingly backed a procedural motion to prevent any legislator from blocking a vote on Califf’s nomination and to limit debate on the decision to 30 hours. A final vote could come as early as Tuesday.
