Scripps Clinic performs stem cell heart therapy
San Diego Union-Tribune

Scripps Clinic has treated a heart failure patient with stem cells, harvested from the patient’s fat. It’s the first such treatment Scripps doctors have performed under the Athena clinical trial, sponsored by San Diego-based Cytori Therapeutics. The patient received the autologous stem cells a few weeks ago, he said. It’s too early to tell if there’s going to be any benefit, said Dr. Richard Schatz, the trial’s principal investigator at Scripps. Improvement may take about six months to show up.
