Santa Clara Valley Medical Center fined $50,000 for lapse in ER care
The Mercury News - Marissa Cevallos

The state of California has fined Santa Clara Valley Medical Center $50,000 after a man with dangerously low red blood cell levels died in the emergency waiting room last year. A nurse didn’t think the patient needed immediate care when he assumed a line drawn under the man’s hemoglobin levels was meant as a cross-out. Actually, a physician had just diagnosed the patient, who said he’d felt dizzy for the past four days, with severe anemia.
