Outpatient reimbursement likely to improve with implementation of ACA, study finds

Reimbursements to emergency departments for outpatient visits are likely to improve once the nation’s new health reform law is fully implemented, a new study found.

The study, published online last week in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, analyzed data from the HHSMedical Expenditure Panel Survey from the start of 2005 through the end of 2010. Looking at historical reimbursement patterns for that period, researchers estimated emergency department payments would have been on average 17% higher per outpatient visit if uninsured patients had Medicaid coverage they can get now under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
