In the end, the gravity of the vote outshined its little-in-doubt result. In a rare Christmas Eve session, the Senate voted, 60-39, to approve a sweeping health reform package, moving closer to fulfilling President Barack Obama’s top domestic issue. As lawmakers and staffers spilled out into the halls, members from both sides of the aisles–combatants for most of the year—congratulated each other, many offering wishes of a merry Christmas.
