New, expanded Concord health care clinic opens to serve uninsured

Maria Visintini’s thrift store had just closed, a casualty of the economy, and she had lost her Kaiser health coverage when in 2009 she thought she suffered a heart attack. She was rushed by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and spent the night for observation. She didn’t have a heart attack after all, but still got a $49,000 hospital bill. “I just flipped,” said Visintini, now 71 and living in a Pittsburg senior apartment. “I could’ve bought a Mercedes for that.”
