Nearly 21,000 customer records hit by Blue Shield security breach
Orange County Register

Blue Shield of California announced Thursday that personal information from nearly 21,000 individual and family plan customers was accessed in a security breach late last year. The information included names, addresses, dates of birth and Social Security numbers. Blue Shield said it is notifying those who were impacted and will provide free credit monitoring service for one year. The company said the breach occurred when a vendor who provides enrollment assistance was targeted by a telephone scam at the call center. Since then, additional security measures have been taken, Blue Shield said.
