More than 12,000 in region must find new health coverage

Two well-known companies are pulling out of California’s individual health insurance market, leaving more than 12,000 San Diego County residents to look for new coverage as a federal mandate to buy insurance approaches on Jan. 1.

Aetna and UnitedHealthcare, both relatively small players in California’s individual health insurance market, announced their exit shortly after the state named the health plans that will be sold by Covered California, the state’s new federally mandated health exchange.
