Medi-Cal could see surge of young immigrants, but challenges remain

A new study estimates that up to 125,000 young immigrants are eligible for Medi-Cal under a state policy that provides help for undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.

While Med-Cal coverage could increase access to care and reduce burdens on the safety net, immigrant youth still face barriers to enrolling because they lack information on the program or fear deportation, according to Laurel Lucia, a policy analyst at the UC Berkeley Labor Center, one of the groups behind the study.
