Law defers hospitals’ seismic work

Delays in state deadlines for hospital seismic work, due to a new law and the regulations implementing it, could save California hospitals billions of dollars in coming years, experts say. Some Bay Area hospitals could benefit from Senate Bill 499, despite the region’s web of earthquake faults, said Chris Poland, chairman and CEO of San Francisco’s Degenkolb Engineers, who testified last year in favor of the new law. “Hospitals are looking for any help they can get, (and can now) focus on structures that are most vulnerable.”
