Hospitals back state fee plan in bid for more federal dollars

California hospitals have agreed to assess themselves at least $2 billion in an effort to collect even more in federal aid to help offset the costs of subsidizing care to the poor, including children. But the complex, two-year deal requires Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s signature, which is far from assured given his administration’s earlier threats to veto the package approved by lawmakers over the weekend. He has not taken a stand on the final version, aides say.
