Healthcare Reform Is Altering How Rheumatologists Earn Money

Healthcare reform is having an effect on how physicians who specialize in rheumatology are making money. The number of rheumatologists who participate in accountable care organizations (ACOs) grew from 8% in 2011 to 23% in 2012, according to findings from Medscape’s Rheumatologist Compensation Report: 2013, published online April 26.

Just under half of rheumatologists (49%) said their compensation for 2012 remained level with the previous year compared with 52% in 2011.
