Healthcare costs rise, but rate of increase slows

As government officials prepare to meet today to begin the laborious task of melding two different congressional healthcare bills, a new report shows that the cost of healthcare in 2008 increased, but by the smallest rate in almost half a century. According to an analysis prepared by economists at the government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and published in today’s Health Affairs journal, total national health spending grew 4.4% in 2008, the slowest rate of increase since the centers began tracking such numbers in 1960.
