Health reform would place greater burden on California for its generosity

When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last week lambasted national health care reform as a looming “disaster” for California, critics dismissed his words as overblown rhetoric from a man known for his rhetorical flourishes. But the heated back-and-forth shrouded some important truths: The health care bills pending in Congress would place significant new burdens on California’s severely strained health care program for the poor, Medi-Cal, though probably not soon enough to exacerbate the state’s current $20 billion budget shortfall.
