Health reform is one step in right direction
Sacramento Bee

The Supreme Court did the wise thing by upholding the Affordable Care Act. While the federal health reform law alone will not remedy all our health care system’s ills, it takes significant steps in the right direction. With the court’s affirmation, the public and private sectors must now work together to make the law effective.

The Supreme Court’s ruling means, most significantly, that tens of millions of Americans will no longer have to live without health insurance. For the first time, low- to middle-income families will be eligible for subsidized coverage and childless adults living near the poverty line can enroll in public coverage. Not since the creation of the Medicaid and Medicare programs in the mid-1960s have we done nearly as much to expand health care access. On that account alone, the reform law is a major achievement.
