Health plan profits rise, but remain less than 5 percent
Sacramento Business Journal

Collective profits at the six health maintenance organizations that dominate the Sacramento region soared to $3.2 billion in 2009, a huge upswing from net income of $221 million a year earlier.

The numbers are skewed by industry giant Kaiser Permanente, which lost $794 million in 2008 and made $2.1 billion in 2009 to report the highest profit margin of the bunch: 4.9 percent. Anthem Blue Cross, which has come under scrutiny for premium increases in recent weeks, trailed at 4.0 percent.
