Health Misinformation Abounds On Pinterest, Instagram And Visual Social Media

If you want some health information, would you ever go to Pinterest? Well, the same site that is bringing you pictures and videos of a man with his head in a urinal, a baby wearing a bra as a diaper, a cat in a glass jar and quotes such as “spend your life doing strange things with weird people” is apparently serving as a way for people to exchange information about health. How accurate is health information on Pinterest and how well does it represent broader views about health? Well, a new study published in the journal Vaccine found that 75% of “pins” or “discussions” about vaccines voiced negative views about vaccines. Contrast this with a Pew Research Center survey that found 83% of Americans think the measles vaccine is safe.
