Groups want more notice about bad docs

Hundreds of doctors across California, including about three dozen in San Diego County, are currently on probation for infractions ranging from poor record-keeping to sexual assault.

While state regulators automatically alert hospitals and malpractice-insurance companies about these violations, they allow most of the physicians to avoid telling their patients about the disciplinary actions.

Probation notices are the latest flashpoint in a long-running debate about whether problematic doctors are duly disciplined.
