After a few minutes you’re convinced that you’re in the throes of a heart attack. You try to remain calm while you grapple with the thought that maybe you’re just overreacting. But if you’re right, chances are your life-saving journey will begin at your local hospital ER.

Last fall, Salinas resident Larry Hayes, a Monterey County Superior Court judge, strongly suspected he was having heart attack symptoms — but just couldn’t quite convince himself it was true.
