Extending tax hikes for schools gets thumbs up and down here

The possibility of renewing a temporary six-year tax increase to protect school funding is gaining mixed reactions from local education leaders.

To stave off $6 billion in automatic trigger cuts to education, voters in 2012 passed Proposition 30, a temporary quarter-cent sales tax increase and state income tax hike for the wealthy. Although the proposition does not expire until December 2018, there are already initiatives filed to extend the state income tax increase indefinitely.
