Doctors prepare for state mandated wait limits

No one knows how first-in-the-nation regulations limiting how long Californians have to wait for a doctor’s appointment will play out. But insiders predict some HMOs might have to expand their networks of doctors, ask existing physicians to do more or lean heavier on technology. The new rules mandate that Californians insured by managed care plans wait no more than 10 days for many appointments and no more than 48 hours if they have urgent needs that don’t require emergency room care or a doctor’s prior authorization.
