Doctors more likely to ’self-refer’ procedures if profit involved, study says

A highly anticipated study adds to the growing amount of evidence showing costly and sometimes unnecessary medical procedures are prescribed significantly more often by doctors who are profiting from them.

Included in the group of “self-referring” physicians studied was Salinas Valley Urology Associates, whose doctors have been the target of a federal investigation, state disciplinary action and numerous lawsuits.
