Tenet Healthcare Corp. is counting on newly insured patients next year to boost the hospital chain’s earnings, which came in weaker than expected in the third quarter as patients continued to seek fewer services.

President and CEO Trevor Fetter said in an interview that the company is optimistic that the situation will turn around in 2014 even if it continues to look bleak in the last quarter of this year.

Tenet reported $28 million in net income on revenue of $2.4 billion, compared with $40 million in net income on $2.2 billion in revenue during the same period the previous year.
