Amid upheavals around the federal health care law, Covered California saw a significant drop in new enrollments for 2019.

California’s individual health plan marketplace, set up under former President Barack Obama’s health care law, announced Wednesday that 1,513,883 individuals signed up for health plans in 2019, about a 0.5 percent drop from the year prior.

While total enrollment in the program is holding, Covered California saw a 23.7 percent decrease in the number of new enrollees who signed up for plans. During the most recent enrollment period, which ended Jan. 15, 295,980 individuals signed up, compared to 388,344 the year previous.
