Covered California building on success of its signups
San Francisco Chronicle

More than 1.2 million Californians enrolled in private health insurance policies before Monday’s midnight deadline, a figure that makes up a sizable portion of the total 7.1 million enrollees nationwide in the state and federal exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act.

Helped by a flurry of signups in March, state officials said the preliminary figures show the exchange, Covered California, has already come close to meeting the Obama administration’s original projection of 1.3 million Californians, and still has applications to process. State officials, however, dispute the federal target numbers and said they have exceeded their own goals.
