California led the nation in health care enrollments as 2013 drew to a close, accounting for about 23 percent of the 2.2 million Americans who selected private insurance policies through state and federal marketplaces set up under the Affordable Care Act, according to federal data released Monday.

Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 28, nearly 499,000 Californians chose plans through Covered California, the state’s online “exchange,” the Department of Health and Human Services said in a report.
