California hospitals struggle to meet tougher quake standards

The massive earthquake in Haiti disabled nearly all of the country’s hospitals, providing a sobering reminder in quake-prone California of the risks hospitals face in a catastrophic temblor. While building codes in California are much more stringent than those in developing countries, hundreds of hospitals throughout the state, including dozens in the Central Valley, face closure if they don’t meet a 2013 deadline to comply with state earthquake standards.
