California Blue Shield extension unlikely to affect other health plans

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said that Blue Shield of California has agreed to give its 115,000 customers on the individual market 180 days before canceling their current coverage. That would carry them through the end of the Obamacare open enrollment period, March 31.

The carrier had told its customer their plans would be canceled at the end of this year.

“Neither federal nor [California] law requires health insurers to cancel plans by Dec. 31. … This is something the health insurers and Covered California have decided,” Jones said at a press conference, referring to the state’s exchange.
