Bay Area counties stand to lose millions of dollars if Medicaid expansion ruled unconstitutional

Bay Area counties stand to lose tens of millions of dollars, and health coverage for thousands of low-income adults could be in jeopardy, if the Supreme Court declares a planned Medicaid expansion unconstitutional. The changes, set to begin in 2014, were on trial last week in the historic showdown over national health reform, with 26 states arguing to overturn the expansion. Most of the attention before the court hearing focused on the reform law’s requirement that individuals buy health insurance, but as the three-day hearing progressed, it became clear that the Medicaid expansion was also in peril.
