AMA debates whether obesity should be seen as a disease

The American Medical Association’s Council on Science and Public Health issued a report concluding that “it is difficult to determine conclusively whether or not obesity is a medical disease,” but seven medical specialty societies disagree and are urging the AMA to officially recognize it as one. The council’s report and a resolution to recognize obesity as a disease were on the agenda of one of the eight reference committees hearing debate at the annual AMA House of Delegates meeting in Chicago on Sunday.
