CHA Learns Innovation Center Will Demonstrate Bundled Payment Programs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new initiative Aug. 23 that will help providers develop models of bundling payments. CMS invites providers to apply to help test and develop four different models of bundled payments. Three models will involve a retrospective bundled payment arrangement and one model will pay providers prospectively. A description and comparison of the four models is available on the CMS website at http://tinyurl.com/3qw2tsb. Under the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative, Medicare will align payments for a particular episode of care, such as heart bypass or hip replacement, rather than paying providers on a fee-for-service basis. The program will be run through the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation. Applicants for Model 1 must submit a nonbinding letter of intent by Sept. 22 and a completed application by Oct. 21. Applicants for Models 2, 3 and 4 must submit a nonbinding letter of intent by Nov. 4 and a completed application by March 15, 2012. Applicants who wish to receive historical Medicare claims data must complete a Research Request Packet by Nov. 4. Contact: Matt Absher, (916) 552-7669, mabsher@calhospital.org
