CHART Board votes to change direction and purpose of taskforce

The California Hospital Assessment and Reporting Taskforce (CHART) Board met last week to discuss and determine the future of CHART.  By unanimous vote, the board fundamentally changed the direction and purpose of CHART.  CHART’s future role will be to aggregate, score and publicly report available measures on California hospital performance.  CHART will no longer collect, analyze or create measures not available from public sources.  The CHA Hospital Quality Committee directed hospital representatives to keep a seat at the table for hospitals if CHART continued to exist.

Over the next few months, the CHART Board will undertake a process of 1) determining the first set of measures for reporting; 2) developing a new budget to address this new role; and 3) modifying the governance structure and processes to enhance the organization.  The board set a deadline of April 30, 2012, to finalize these activities.

The website will be updated in February with data already submitted by hospitals.  This will represent the last data refresh using current measures.  For participating hospitals, health plans and committee members:

  • Data collection and submission can stop immediately.  All vendors can be notified to no longer send data to the CHART team at the University of California, San Francisco.
  • No invoices will be sent for CHART contributions.
  • The New Measures Advisory Group is suspended pending the outcome of actions related to governance structure and process.
