Chief of Alameda County’s medical center prepares for the future

On a Tuesday morning in late August, the 6-foot-5 Wright Lassiter III, chief executive of the Alameda County Medical Center, ambled down a hallway on his way to meet Marion Schales, whom he recruited a year ago to watch over the center’s nearly half a billion dollar budget. Lassiter’s Italian loafers clicked lightly on the white linoleum floor of Highland Hospital — the medical center’s main facility — that he has walked nearly every day for almost six years.
