VolunteerTalk: Reiki Volunteer Program

On January 14, 2016, the CAHHS Volunteer Services Office received the following inquiry from Jennifer Fiterre, Volunteer Coordinator at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville, California:

Please use comment section below to reply to Jennifer’s inquiry.

I have a request from our Oncology Department to start a Reiki Volunteer Program for our infusion patients and eventually add other services such as massage therapy.  Our Risk Management department is requesting more information in regards to what other hospitals might be doing to cover liability issues.  If you are familiar with this kind of volunteer program, would you please share with me policy information regarding liability issues, infection control, and anything I should be aware of for accreditation?  I’d also be very grateful for information you have about volunteers going into the patient home and administering these types of services.

Thank you for any assistance and support.

Reiki Volunteer Onboarding

Our Integrative Healing team includes Reiki services. All the Reiki volunteers receive training outside of our hospital and must complete certification level 1. They are also trained by the Integrative Healing Coordinator and a current volunteer who has attained Reiki Master level. Below are some items from their training checklist: 1. ____ Understands the patient referral process 2. ____ Trained on hand hygiene before and after to providing Reiki treatment 3. ____ Knows how to read and properly respond to room signage 4. ____ Understands the script on the Reiki badge used to offer and explain Reiki treatment 5. ____ Understands acceptable and authorized patient discussion topics 6. ____ Demonstrates appropriate and authorized Reiki hand techniques in a hospital setting 7. ____ Demonstrates the ability to assess and adjust treatment based upon patient’s physical condition 8. ____ Is familiar with patient rooms and controls 9. ____ Understands how to complete all Reiki paperwork in the Integrative Healing Office 10. ____ Discussion topic restrictions with patients 11. ____ Hand Hygiene -wash/sanitize hands before/after each patient contact All of our volunteers are trained on HIPAA, CA Privacy Law, Confidentiality, safety and these forms are in their file and annual re-certification is required. The volunteers track every patient they visit in case follow up is required. Some are trained to use PPE and visit patients in isolation-depending on the level of isolation. At this time, our volunteers do not visit patient homes. We also use similar criteria for volunteers performing comfort hand massage upon request. They are not allowed to perform this on pregnant women. We hope this helps with some of your answers. Megan Moses Lead, Volunteer Services Sharp Healthcare
