VolunteerTalk: Comfort Cart

On August 24, 2017, the CAHHS Volunteer Services Office received the following inquiry from Maria Strmsek, Director of Volunteer Services at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia, California:

We have been asked to provide an Afternoon Comfort Cart for our patients and their visitors.  The suggestion I’ve been provided is to have magazines, books and some sundry items which they receive in their admission kits at the time they arrive.  Our new CNO also wanted to have food snacks on the cart but I’ve learned that those are normally provided by Food Services since they have the patients’ dietary restrictions.  We already provide a magazine cart most days but this is a different request.

Would you please share your position descriptions with me and any competencies that describe the duties, etc.?  Any photos of the cart would be welcomed.  Suggestions or comments would also be appreciated. Thank you

Comfort Cart

Hi Maria, We do a comfort cart in the afternoon with hot tea and coffee, but no snacks. We also have warm, wet towels, reading materials, and I think they have sleep masks to help people rest during the daylight hours. It has been a hit with many. Vicki Veal

Have any concerns regarding patient cross contamination from shared read materials been addressed? Our policy has been that anytime materials go into a patient room, they don't come out. I am under the impression that this is an infection control policy adopted for compliance with The Joint Commission standards.

Hi Maria; I was recently a patient and the hospital provided a welcome packet which included a sleep mask, ear plugs, two word search puzzles and a small pencil. Hope this helps. Jan Morrow
