CHA campaign opposes state-mandated charity care standards for nonprofit hospitals

In opposition to AB 975 (Wieckowski/Bonta), CHA has embarked on a comprehensive public advocacy campaign to increase awareness of the importance of not-for-profit hospitals and the diverse array of community benefit programs they provide throughout California. A new video (below) portrays the damaging impact AB 975 would have on California’s nonprofit  hospitals and the communities they serve.  AB 975 would:

  • Establish a “guilty until proven innocent” hurdle for not-for-profit hospitals to overcome if their operating margin exceeds 10 percent in any given year.
  • Target nonprofit hospitals’ tax status with artificial standards that would harm implementation of the Affordable Care Act and place health care services at risk.
  • Force cutback or elimination of critically important services like cancer research and screening, trauma centers, emergency services, burn units, neonatal care and training for health care professionals.
