The Nuts & Bolts of Exempt Organizations

Exempt organizations currently face increasing scrutiny and oversight from various external sources, ranging from the IRS, to state Attorney Generals, to charity watchdogs, to the general public. Accordingly, both practitioners (CPAs and attorneys) and exempt organization leaders need to be keenly aware of a multitude of the most essential exempt org tax and legal considerations. Learning objectives for this session include:

  • Gain an understanding of the various tax laws most relevant to exempt organizations.
  • Learn about the exempt organization formation process.
  • Learn how to best address exempt organizations issues such as the unrelated business income tax, reasonable compensation, and the prohibition against private inurement.
  • Learn strategies regarding how an exempt organization can best conduct their activities to be protect their tax-exemption.
