HHS Announces $1 Billion in Grants

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has announced the Health Care Innovation Challenge, a program to provide $1 billion in grants for innovation in workforce development and deployment. The money will be awarded to organizations that propose projects to improve the quality of care for patients enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, while lowering costs.

Individual grants will range from $1 million to $30 million over three years to providers, payers, local government, public-private partnerships and multi-payer collaboratives. To be considered, applicants must present a specific plan to expand the workforce that will be operational within six months. The models must also define a clear pathway to sustainability. Applicants must submit a letter of intent by Dec. 19; applications are due Jan. 27. The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation held an informational web seminar Nov. 17. A fact sheet is attached.
