Facilities Must Comply with Emergency Preparedness Conditions of Participation by Nov. 15
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission guidance clarifies regulations which may impact volunteers

In fall 2016, CMS released a final rule and related guidance addressing emergency preparedness conditions of participation. The rule went into effect Nov. 16, 2016; providers are required to comply by Nov. 15, 2017.

In addition, CMS has approved The Joint Commission’s updated emergency management standards, which were created in response to the CMS final rule on emergency preparedness. The Joint Commission will begin surveying to the updated emergency management requirements as of the final rule’s Nov. 15 implementation date.

Because the regulation may impact volunteers, we encourage you to seek guidance from your emergency preparedness and/or hospital leadership. CAHHS Volunteer Services does not recommend that you interpret these regulations on your own as a volunteer or volunteer leader. More information about the rule is available on the CMS website and The Joint Commission website
